Vegas Part 2

Apparently when I did the post for part 1 of our trip I didn't include pictures of Tuesday afternoon. We went back to the strip after rest time to see the flamingos at the Flamingo.

Madie wasn't too interested in them. Instead she spent her time there chasing ducks.

This picture is especially for Zach's brother, Adam. Yep, we're sinners! (we actually didn't do any gambling, but since he called us sinners for going to Vegas we had to at least take a picture and pretend).

Then we walked around a bit and saw the lion outside the MGM.

The Statue of Liberty outside NYNY (which we looked up later and found that it is about half the size of the real one in New York).

Inside NYNY, a statue made out of jelly bellies. You could smell it as you walked by.

Now on to Wednesday!

We did a lot of walking on Wednesday. There are bridges at several of the intersections on the strip so that you don't have to cross the street. Well Madie thought they were great and wanted to stop and look at the cars and buses go by.

She also decided that she didn't need my help to do the escalators that take you from the bridge to the street and vice versa. This made me quite nervous, but she did really well.

We went to M&M world...kind of a bummer. Lori & Justin went there and said there is a little video you can watch about the making of M&Ms but it was closed for renovation while we were there. Oh, well.

Outside of M&M world, were two people dressed up as Woody & Buzz. It was random, but Madie likes Toy Story, so we got a picture.

Then we went to the MGM. Did you know they have a lion exhibit inside? There was a male and a female lion and we got there right as they were having there lunch. Madie thought it was great that the lions were eating out of the trainers hands.

And they have a glass cave type area where you can actually walk under the lions.

She was entranced the whole time we were there and kept asking to see the lions again.

Later we went to the Bellagio to see the garden they have there. It was really neat and Madie enjoyed it WAY more than I thought she would. They had all these giant bugs and some really neat flowers and some water features, one of which sprayed the water out of the ground up into the air.

This chocolate fountain is in the Guinness Book of World Records for how tall it is. 

We also got to see the fountains outside the Bellagio. They do a little show  to music and Madie loved that the water went "up high". She still talks about it!

We had a blast! I would love to go back with just Zach. Maybe someday.

Year of Vacations - Vegas part 1

This year we have the pleasure of going on three vacations. The first one was a trip to Vegas two weeks ago. In August we will be going to the D.C./Maryland area for Tyler's (Zach's brother) wedding. The last one we will go on will be our yearly trip to Sedona the first weekend in December.

Vacation Number One: Las Vegas...part 1
Why did we go to Vegas? We have never been on a family vacation with just the three of us and Lori & Justin had such a great time there on their honeymoon and there are lots of free things to do there. My parents were super awesome and let us use their timeshare so that we didn't have to pay for a hotel. I think Madie really liked that because it meant she could still have her oatmeal in the mornings and it had this:

The pool was heated but it was still on the cold side, especially since it was windy and the sun had set behind the buildings. So she mostly played in the spa. She liked touching the water as it came down the rocks. These pictures were from Monday. Yep, the day we got there she wanted to play in the pool (it was right outside our room). She liked it so much that it was the first thing she asked for on Tuesday morning. She asked to play in the pool multiple times each day.

What is she looking at?

The waterfall at the Mirage. This kid LOVES water. Every time we passed by water we had to stop and look (and touch if possible). We went to the Venetian on Tuesday morning to do the gondola ride, but it wasn't open yet. So we went across the street to the Mirage to see the white tigers and the dolphins, but it wasn't open yet either, so we walked back across the street to the Venetian to do the gondola ride and on the way took this picture.

Inside the Palazzo (which is connected to the Venetian) they had an interesting art display.

We finally made it on to the gondola ride, which was something I had wanted to do. Totally NOT worth it! It cost $32 for the three of us (and that's with Madie being free) and it was probably only a 10 minute ride. Although Madie would have liked it to be shorter...or to have been able to walk around the boat. I'm glad that we did it, but we probably won't ever do it again.

Madie enjoyed all the stairs inside the Venetian.

More water...there was lots of water in Vegas.

This was at lunch on Tuesday. There were several older ladies sitting near us and they kept looking Madie and smiling as we were there. We got lots of comments every where we went on how cute she is. I'd have to agree!

This was on the ceiling and one of the walls at the restaurant we ate at. Zach had to take a picture because it is exactly like a wall he designed last semester!

After lunch we finally got to see the Secret Garden & Dolphin Habitat. This was definitely worth the money (about $30 for the three of us...again Madie was free)! The Secret Garden would have been more exciting if any of the animals had been doing anything. I wonder if it was because it was right after lunch time so they were all sleepy? We did get to see one of the tigers in action. It was actually pretty cute because we were standing at one end of the cage where it had been jumping up onto the tree and as we started to walk away toward the other end of the cage the tiger jumped down and it was as if it was following us. It came right up to the edge so Madie could see it really well.

And then there were the dolphins. Madie LOVED the dolphins! Since the whole place is based on research and learning there aren't any scheduled performances like at Sea World. However, we got to see them feed the dolphins and got to see them playing with a ball, which Madie thought was hilarious.

It was really neat there. They had three separate pools that the dolphins were in and there were two or three dolphins in each. There was also an underwater viewing area and it was worth the $30 just to watch Madie down there. She would run from window to window (luckily it wasn't very crowded at the time), ask where the whale went (she calls dolphins whales) and then squeal when she's see one. I think were were down there for a good 20 minutes.   

After the underwater viewing we went back up to watch them some more. Seeing how excited Madie got watching the "whales" was the highlight of our trip!

After that we went back to the hotel for some rest time and some pool time. Then we went back to the strip to eat dinner. We ate at a Mexican place inside NYNY called Gonzalez & Gonzalez. It was pretty good. Zach liked it. I ordered a fish taco (which I had never had before) and didn't like it. The salsa was too hot but if I took it off then it just tasted like fish. So I ate the shredded beef burrito off of Madie's plate and it was delicious!

Madie's Second Birthday

For Madie's birthday, we had just our immediate family over. It was nice to have so many of our loved ones with us to celebrate.

Viva Las Vegas

We are planning a trip to Vegas in a couple of weeks. I'm excited and kind of nervous. We've never been there (unless you count sitting in a plane at the Vegas airport) and this will be our first family vacation with just the three of us.
That being said, I'm posting to ask for your help. Have you been to Vegas? Is there anything that you recommend we do while there (we'll be driving up on a Monday and coming home on Thursday)? Is there anything you've done that was totally NOT worth the time/money? I'd love to know what you all think!

Random Pictures

Madie has discovered a new hiding spot. Unfortunately, it isn't the safest place for her. She was so proud of herself the first time she managed to get in there and I thought it was hilarious so I laughed. Now we are working on keeping her out! Where am I talking about? The dryer.

The girls made a maze out of the foam squares the other day and had a blast crawling through it over and over.

Do you like the row of oranges? I'm sure you can guess how they got there!

I was sitting at the table one afternoon and all of a sudden this is what I saw. I thought it was so cute to see her little hands peeking above the counter top to put the oranges in a row. She kept putting them up and taking them down, over & over & over...for probably 10 or 15 minutes!

Madie has developed a new habit...licking her plate. Here she is actually licking bbq sauce off of an uncooked corn tortilla. She loves to eat the tortillas and it grosses me out! Every time I get the bag of them out to make tacos or tostadas she asks for one. 

This time it was ice cream.

This is my new favorite picture. This morning as I was sweeping the floor, I hear Madie laughing hysterically and saying "pocket" over and over again. I told her to come here and this is what she looked like.

She thought she had discovered a pocket in her jammies! At least now I know one possible explanation for the picture of me around her age with my hand down my pants.


Zach is almost done for the semester. Which is exciting but at the same time means he doesn't get much sleep (he went to bed at 3 this morning) and I don't see him much. The street fair I did on Saturday went ok. I sold enough to break even and even make a little...but totally not worth it! I'm not sure if the baby shower for Saturday is still on since my friend had her baby last Monday. I'm still waiting to hear from her as to what she wants to do. And I'm hoping to get the street fair leftovers up on my site in the next few days...so if you're in the market for some cute red, white & blue hair accessories for cheap I'll be selling them soon!

Busy, busy, busy

I realize that I haven't posted anything about Easter. I tried to the other day but while in the midst of uploading about a zillion photos my computer froze. I'm still mad about it so I haven't gone back to deal with that yet. Now on to what this post is about...being busy!

I haven't been super busy lately, but the next few weeks are going to fly by because I have so much on my to-do list. This Saturday is women's conference from 11-2. I'm definitely going for part of it because Kristi & Jenny are in the play. I might leave after the play so that Zach has more time to work on homework, because his final review is the week of the 26th. So he will be spending much of the next week or so working on homework. The Saturday after this coming one I signed up to do a street fair with Kristi. It is a fundraiser that my aunt Wendi is helping run for her boys' school. That means my free time next week is dedicated to the making of hair accessories. I've never done anything like this before and I'm kind of excited about it. I also have a friend who is having a baby shower that day. Since they are at the same time I won't be able to make it to the shower but I would still like to drop by a gift at some point in the day for her. The next Saturday is the baby shower that I'm throwing for a different friend of mine. So the days preceding that will be spent making desserts and decorations. And I'll probably have a little party for Madison's birthday in May.

But to start off the craziness that will be my life for the next little while, Zach & I got invited to a fancy schmancy party tomorrow. The School of Bio Engineering is having their "Celebration of Excellence" at some hotel in Tempe and we are going to the dinner and soirée. Zach told me about this last Friday and when he got home I found out that cocktail attire is required. Yeah...I don't own any cocktail attire. But luckily I know people who do! I borrowed a dress from Zach's sister, my sister & my aunt before finding something that would work. I'll try to remember to get a picture of us all dressed up.
